Without credit cards, the miles and points game is incredibly limited. There’s no easier source than credit cards when it comes to acquiring a ton of miles quickly, especially for those of us with residency in the United States. Every few months I make a list of credit cards I currently have and if I am planning on keeping or cancelling them, and also what I use them for.
Here are my current credit cards going into 2019:
- Platinum Card from American Express®
- American Express® Gold Card
- Amex EveryDay® Credit Card
- The Starwood Preferred Guest® Credit Card
- Starwood Preferred Guest® Luxury Card
I’m keeping the Platinum, Gold, and EveryDay cards for sure and I only have to make a decision as to which SPG card I’m keeping. Probably the Luxury Card, but I still haven’t decided yet.
- Miles & More® World Elite Mastercard®
- AAdvantage® Aviator® Red World Elite Mastercard®
- AAdvantage® Aviator® Business Mastercard®
The Lufthansa Miles & More is my #1 card since I love Miles & More (the annual fee is waived for SEN/HON members), so no way I’m ever cancelling that one. I will cancel the AA Aviator Business probably when the annual fee comes up as the personal version has more benefits than the Business version.
- Chase Sapphire Reserve®
- Chase Freedom Unlimited® credit card
- British Airways Visa Signature® card
- Ink Business Cash credit card
I’m keeping the Sapphire Reserve and Freedom Unlimited, but will likely cancel the BA card when the annual fee comes up as there’s no point in keeping it. However, with the 5/24 rule expanding rapidly, I’m not sure how to change/update my Chase cards. For now, I’m keeping the Ink Business Cash and I simply transfer the points earned to my Sapphire.
- Citi® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® World Elite™ Mastercard®
- Citi Premier Card
Both will be cancelled as I don’t want to deal with Citi anymore.
- TD Aeroplan Visa Signature® Credit Card
Also to be cancelled as there’s no point in keeping the card.
I’m happy with my current credit cards and apart from cancelling some of the cards above, I don’t think I am going to get any new cards soon. Main reason being is that I want to drop under 5/24 and also because I have plenty of miles as it is and I probably should look at using them first before collecting more.
My primary card for all non-bonus spend is the Lufthansa Miles & More credit card and I use the AMEX Platinum for all airline tickets and award taxes and fees. The Sapphire Reserve is my go-to for dining and other travel related purchases, while I use the AMEX Gold for gas and groceries. I use the SPG Luxury for all of my SPG/Marriott hotel stays. I plan on cancelling other credit cards which I have and don’t really use as I see no point in keeping them. While my portfolio may not be the most powerful, it works for me and I’m quite happy with the miles & points I earn.
Which credit cards are you planning on applying for this year?
