Fiji Airways, the flag carrier of Fiji, partners with both American Airlines and Alaska Airlines whereby you can earn and redeem miles for travel on Fiji Airways. While you can earn and redeem miles with American Airlines on all FJ routes, you can also earn Alaska Airlines miles on all FJ routes, but you can’t redeem AS miles on FJ routes to/from Asia (you can redeem them on all other routes).
Fiji Airways award availability is… interesting. At times, I see tons of award seats available and at times there is nothing for months. It is random. Furthermore, while Economy Class can generally be booked using miles, if you’d like Business Class on Fiji Airways, you will have to be extremely flexible – at least on the routes from Nadi to San Francisco or Los Angeles.
One important thing to note is that Fiji Airways releases more award availability to American Airlines than Alaska Airlines. Therefore searching on Alaska’s website is only accurate if you wish to redeem Alaska miles. If you want to redeem American Airlines miles, you should use ExpertFlyer (you can also use Alaska’s website, but it doesn’t have all the award space that AA can see). If you don’t have ExpertFlyer, you can just call American Airlines and ask about award space on your desired date of travel. You can even route via Australia on Qantas and then Fiji Airways to Nadi, if you’d like.
Fiji Airways award availability is mostly consistent throughout their entire route network – it isn’t the best, but it also isn’t impossible to book. The Asia routes and intra-South Pacific routes are generally easier to book using miles than the North American routes. How is Fiji Airways? Excellent! Friendly cabin crew, delicious food, and great service. While Business Class isn’t lie-flat, I think everything else makes up for it.
