I’m trying to hold back the tears in my eyes, I really am. I can’t believe tomorrow is coming so quickly, I honestly never expected Lufthansa to announce a revenue-based Miles & More so quickly after Air France did.. I mean even British Airways hasn’t announced anything revenue-based… yet. I had the biggest hope that Lufthansa would be the last major airline in Europe to make this awful change and destroy their frequent flyer programme.. but that didn’t happen.

Miles & More - The Best Way to Book Lufthansa First Class

Miles & More – The Best Way to Book Lufthansa First Class

In December, Lufthansa’s Christmas present to us loyal Miles & More status card holders was an *amazing* announcement that starting on 12 March 2018, Miles & More would begin awarding miles based on the ticket price and not the booking class/distance flown. In reality, Lufthansa was generous as all travel ticketed starting tomorrow will earn based on revenue. That means you can theoretically book flights for a year out today, and still earn miles based on the current system of booking class/distance flown.

A revenue-based frequent flyer programme is no longer a frequent flyer programme, but rather a frequent spending programme. This change is only an improvement for the top 10% that spend more money than they need to on tickets – which is why they will be more rewarded now.

  • Miles & More Members without status will earn 4 miles per Euro spent on the base fare and carrier-imposed surcharges
  • Miles & More Status Members (Frequent Travellers, Senators, HON Circle Members) will earn:
    • 6 miles per Euro spent on the base fare and carrier-imposed surcharges for flights on Lufthansa, SWISS International Air Lines, Austrian Airlines, United Airlines, Air Canada, LOT Polish Airlines, Croatia Airlines, Adria, and Air Dolomiti
    • 5 miles per Euro spent on the base fare and carrier-imposed surcharges for flights on Eurowings, Brussels Airlines, or “another Miles & More partner airline”

The new revenue-based system will apply for every ticket booked via a Lufthansa Group booking channel. Miles & More specifies that if your ticket is booked via a travel agent or online travel agency, you will know which system (revenue-based or traditional) is used to calculate your miles once you receive your ticket number.

While I love Lufthansa, I’ve been very much disappointed with them the past few months. Miles & More claims this new way to award miles will significantly benefit members as the current system has been “incomprehensible” and “not liked” by many members. I don’t ever remember being asked my opinion on the subject as a loyal Senator member for over ten years.

Tomorrow is a dark day, and I will spend it reflecting on how amazing Miles & More has been over the past years… because tomorrow, it dies.
