SWISS International Air Lines, the premium carrier in the Lufthansa Group, offers First Class on all long-haul routes. Lufthansa only offers First Class service to select destinations and therefore it is increasingly becoming harder and harder to book Lufthansa First Class. However, SWISS First Class awards remain wide open for Miles & More Senators and HON Circle Members.
LX First isn’t as popular as Lufthansa First Class (as only Miles & More SEN/HONs can book it using miles), and therefore there is way more availability on virtually all SWISS long-haul routes. At the moment, I am seeing as many as 4 seats on routes such as Zurich to Montreal, Boston, Newark, and Chicago. SWISS normally releases 1-2 award seats per flight in First Class (with some exceptions on popular routes like SFO, LAX, HKG, SIN, BKK, etc.), but I’ve never seen as many as 4 available on a single flight in First Class. Keep in mind, that while the person redeeming miles must be a SEN/HON, other travellers do not need to be. However, all passengers must be confirmed on the same booking as the SEN/HON member. Business Class award availability is also incredible on these routes and you can book SWISS Business using any Star Alliance miles.
Miles & More also offers a companion award for SEN/HONs – the second passenger’s ticket is only 50% of the required miles. This is a fantastic deal and incredible benefit of Miles & More status. Miles & More does impose fuel surcharges, however, when originating in select European countries, the YQ can significantly be lowered.
SWISS First remains a very exclusive way to fly and therefore it is incredibly hard to book using miles due to restrictions. SWISS does, however, frequent offer discounted tickets in First Class for two passengers – for example, you could fly Europe to China for ~$2k USD per passenger (only if booking for 2 passengers). Check SWISS’ website for fantastic deals in First and Business Class!
