Lufthansa First Class is an incredible way to fly – end of story. No other airline is able to provide such an amazing and consistent First Class experience from the moment you arrive at the airport to the moment you end your journey. The issue is that Lufthansa is still removing First Class from many aircraft and their new aircraft going forward won’t feature First Class.. so award availability is becoming increasingly hard to find.

Generally on North American routes, the easiest First Class destinations on Lufthansa are those on the East Coast – since the flights are shorter, most people book Business or Premium Economy Class, which means there are more First Class seats left for sale, which means more award availability. West Coast routes like San Francisco and Los Angeles are incredibly difficult to book using miles – you may have to wait until the day of departure.

There are, however, two Lufthansa flights to a North American city with plenty of benefits – the cabins are usually empty and the flight is 12+ hours each direction. Which flight am I talking about? Frankfurt/Munich to Mexico City. This route is ultra-long and First Class is often wide open. The Frankfurt flight features First Class on the Boeing 747-8i and the Munich flight on the Airbus A340-600. Keep in mind that if not booking with Miles & More, you have to wait until 14 days prior to departure for Lufthansa to begin releasing flight award availability.

The one important aspect to note is that while these routes often have incredible First Class availability, most frequent flyer programmes won’t let you route via a third region. So if you want to fly from Europe to North America, you can’t route via Mexico (Central America). The one programme that does is Aeroplan. Aeroplan doesn’t have any restrictions on transiting through a third (or fourth) region and therefore you can totally fly from North America to Europe via Mexico City on United/Lufthansa as long as your routing is within maximum permitted mileage. Aeroplan is generous, so that shouldn’t be an issue with most cities.

The Mexico City routes are the best routes to find Lufthansa First Class award availability if you would like an ultra-long flight… after all, who wouldn’t? Especially on Lufthansa First Class…
