Most of the time, SWISS First Class award redemptions are highly restricted to only Miles & More Senator or HON Circle Members… they should be restricted all of the time per the official rules… but SWISS doesn’t know how to properly block “O” Class inventory and occasionally SWISS First becomes bookable using other Star Alliance miles… that happened again yesterday.
No one really knows the reason why SWISS started restricting First Class awards to Senator and HON Circle Members a few years ago, since SWISS First Class isn’t any better than Lufthansa First Class (the blocking should be the other way around, in my opinion). Regardless, SWISS doesn’t know how to control inventory well and therefore sometimes First “O” Class seats are released to all Star Alliance airlines. Since this is a rare opportunity, I decided to take advantage of it and book friends and family on SWISS First Class using Aeroplan miles.
The best way to book SWISS First during this “glitch” is with Aeroplan miles as they charge 70k miles for a one-way ticket between Europe and America, and best of all, Aeroplan does NOT impose fuel surcharges on SWISS. 70k miles plus under $50 for a 12-hour SWISS flight in First Class on their Boeing 777-300ER is an incredible deal. While I could book SWISS First for family or friends through Miles & More, I would have to be travelling with them and it would cost more miles (not to mention that fuel surcharges are imposed).
The best way to be alerted when SWISS has another “glitch” and releases First Class award seats to other Star Alliance airlines is to simply follow our blogs as we will be the first ones to let you know. For those of you that were able to book SWISS First yesterday, congrats!
