American Express is all around my favourite bank: they have a wide variety of different credit and charge cards, the benefits on each card are compelling, sign-up bonuses are generous, and AMEX Membership Rewards points transfer to many airlines. I personally value Membership Rewards points more than Chase Ultimate Rewards points for two simple reasons: 1) AMEX has way more transfer partners and 2) AMEX MR points are much easier to acquire.
It has been a while since I posted about what current credit cards I have and I’m working on an updated post that should go live by the end of the week. In the meantime, I’ve been cleaning out my cards and applying for new ones while cancelling old ones I no longer use. While I was doing inventory, I realised that 50% of the cards I have are American Express. I have 20 cards currently open and 10 of those are AMEX cards. That’s insane and perhaps demonstrates my love towards the bank. Here is the full list:
- Amex EveryDay® Credit Card
- Gold Delta SkyMiles® Credit Card
- American Express® Green Card
- Premier Rewards Gold Card from American Express
- Platinum Card® from American Express
- The Starwood Preferred Guest® Credit Card from American Express
- Gold Card from American Express
- The Enhanced Business Platinum Card®
- The Business Gold Rewards Card
- Gold Delta SkyMiles® Business Credit Card
So why do I have so many AMEX cards? Well, because I LOVE American Express. They’ve never let me down and the benefits on most AMEX cards I have are incredible. Side note: The Green Card is a “classic” AMEX card and the only reason I have it is because there was a targeted promotion recently for 25k MR points after $1k spend… other than that, I don’t see a long term value in the card. Same with the regular Gold Card – a 25k bonus for getting it. I recently also applied for both Delta Gold Cards as the sign-up bonus is currently 50k, so it was worth it.
AMEX allows you to have a maximum of 4 credit cards at one time (personal and business combined) and as many charge cards as you want. So as you can see, I can’t get any more credit cards since I already have the EveryDay, SPG, and Delta Gold personal and business cards – the rest of the cards are all charge cards.
Which cards do I use the most? I use the Platinum Card for accessing the Centurion Lounges, Delta Sky Clubs, and 5x points on airfare. I use the Premier Rewards Gold Card for spend in bonus categories (gas, restaurants, etc.), and I alternate between the EveryDay and SPG for everyday spend. The other cards I mostly have right now for business purposes or because I recently applied for them due to the increased sign-up bonuses.
I realise that many people might have more American Express cards than me, but I still think it’s insane and awesome that half of my cards are AMEX cards. I’ve been a Member Since 2013 (the year I turned 18), and I couldn’t be happier about my relationship with American Express.
How many AMEX cards do you have?
