Visiting a Friend in Chicago – Introduction

My awesome weekend in Chicago came to an end on Sunday afternoon after my friend was kind enough to drop me off at O’Hare airport about two hours before my flight to San Francisco. There are about three direct flights between Chicago and Seattle with United daily, but since I wanted more miles… the obvious choice was to fly through San Francisco.

As we arrived at the airport, I noticed Lufthansa’s retro Boeing 747-8i, D-ABYT. It was really cool to see it since I hadn’t yet and have been tracking it so I could potentially fly it one day. I spent my time before boarding at a United Club snacking and catching up on email and news from the miles and points world.

Boarding was right on time without any delays. They were offering $300 USD for taking a later flight to San Francisco… but again, since I was on a paid First Class ticket.. I couldn’t because the later flight only had Economy available… wonderful!

My flight to San Francisco was operated by a Boeing 737 and the flight time was scheduled to be about four and a half hours. Boarding was complete about ten minutes before the scheduled departure time and pre-departure beverages were offered during boarding. We were also scheduled to arrive in San Francisco about twenty minutes early.

We departed Chicago right on time and were instantly presented with a gorgeous view of Chicago and also above the clouds with the sunset. Since we were flying towards the sun, the sunset view lasted for about two hours while we were at cruising altitude – so it was nice to be able to admire the world from the sky.

Dinner and drink orders were taken when we reached cruising altitude and the drinks were distributed about fifteen minutes later along with warm nuts. I decided to have some tea with lemon and sugar along with my meal.

The dinner menu consisted of three options: pasta, ribs, and beef. I went with the beef instead of pasta (like I normally do) and was actually glad that I tried something different for once since it was delicious. As usual, the salad was also tasty. The dessert consisted of delicious ice cream (something that American carriers always get right).

I spent the rest of the flight sleeping and simply looking out into the world. We landed in San Francisco a few minutes early and I headed to the AMEX Centurion Lounge to relax and wait for my final flight to Seattle.

On another note, I miss flying with United. I haven’t flown them for about two months as of now and I really do miss them. My flight schedule has been so messed up lately that I’m almost MVP with Alaska Airlines… I miss you United and your quality service, I will fly with you soon!

  1. I miss flying non-stop from my home airport (IAD) but when I end up on United because there are no other options, I’m quickly reminded of why I’ve been on a “United strike” for the last 3 years or so. Case in point: I flew from BDL to IAD in first on quite possibly the filthiest CRJ 700 ever. United knows what they need to do – they are simply unable to execute.
