United Airlines First Class B737 Houston to Seattle

a plane on the runway

United Airlines 1603
Houston (IAH) – Seattle (SEA)
Boeing 737-900
15 November 2014

I left the KLM lounge around ten minutes before scheduled departure time and it took me fifteen minutes to walk from gate D8 to gate C43. Upon arriving, we were informed there is an issue with one of the components inside of the airplane and that there was going to be a slight delay. The original departure time was 17:42 and it kept being pushed back by 30 minutes. Around 18:20 we were informed there is a gate change since the airplane that was supposed to be taking us to Seattle isn’t going to fly anytime soon. We all went to C40 and waited and finally boarding began around 19:10 and we departed close to 20:00 since all of the luggage and cargo needed to be unloaded from the previous aircraft and brought to the new one.

Originally there was no plane at C40 and we waited and waited and it eventually rolled in.

At this point, most people were tired and went to sleep straight away after boarding. The flight was operated by one of the Sky Interior B737s with IFE! Not that I actually use the IFE for anything other than the Airshow, but still.

I do have a remark about the crew – they were not the nicest I’ve had with United. They didn’t say anything to be rude but rather their actions were quite cold, they respond to questions quickly with one-words like ‘Yes’ or ‘No’. They spent most of the time laughing and talking in the galley rather than attending to the passenger’s needs. Meals were distributed and they shut the curtain and were quite loud in the forward galley. They maybe came out once or twice, to clear trays and then later before landing.

There were two choices for dinner:

  • Pasta with white sauce and salad
  • Chicken cacciatore with salad

I had the pasta last time, so this time I decided to try the chicken. It tasted like rubber, but at least the salad was fresh and tasted much better than the ‘potatoes’.

Drinks were distributed with cookies and glasses were collected right away without question.

After dinner, I slept for the rest of the flight and woke up as we began the final descend into Seattle. We were on the ground shortly thereafter.

And with that, my holiday in Mexico ended quickly. I don’t have any flights currently planned for the rest of the year mainly because I don’t need to fly anywhere and I’ve already re-qualified for Star Alliance Gold.

  1. Why is it that FAs can spend most of their work shift talking to each other while people working in other occupations would be issued a verbal warning from their supervisor for such conduct? I just don’t understand that. It is so unprofessional.

    1. I agree. Personally I don’t care if they talk to themselves or whatever, but as long as it doesn’t interfere with the service (which in this case it did).
