American Express is my favourite issuer of Travel Rewards Credit Cards, Hotel Rewards Credit Cards, and generally any Point Rewards Credit Cards. They also have some amazing No Annual Fee Credit Cards, that earn real Membership Rewards points that can be transferred to many airlines and hotels at a 1:1 ratio.. that’s incredible for a no annual fee card.

One of the first American Express cards I applied for after turning 18 was the Premier Rewards Gold Card, it has been in my wallet ever since and I use it on a daily basis. A few years ago the card even received some new benefits including a $100 USD airline incidental fee credit and more. The key features of the Premier Rewards Gold card as of today include:

  • Earn 3 MR points per dollar spent on airfare purchased directly from airlines
  • Earn 2 MR points per dollar spent at U.S. restaurants, gas stations, and supermarkets
  • Earn 1 MP point per dollar spent on everything else
  • $100 USD airline incidental fee credit (can be used towards checked bag fees, upgrade fees, etc.)
  • No Foreign Transaction Fees

Earning more than one point per dollar spent is incredible since rewards points can quickly add up if you spend a lot in the above categories. I mainly use this card for purchases at U.S. gas stations and supermarkets since I use my Platinum Card for airfare purchases as it earns 5 MR points per dollar spent on airfare.

The Premier Rewards Gold Card is like a mini version of the Platinum Card as it includes an airline incidental fee credit and earns bonus points in the above categories. In fact, the Platinum Card and Premier Rewards Gold Card are a perfect combination and I keep both in my wallet. I’ve had the Premier Rewards Gold Card a long time and it has truly served me well. Yes, there is an annual fee, however I value the $100 USD airline incidental fee credit as good as cash and that automatically lowers the annual fee of the card by half.

What is awesome is that the Premier Rewards Gold Card is super easy to get approved for, even if you are new to credit cards and don’t have a long credit history. It is literally the first or second card I was ever approved for with no previous credit history. Also, there are frequently sign-up bonuses of up to 50k MR points after completing a certain amount of spend.

American Express continues to be my favourite issuer of Travel Rewards Credit Cards and Hotel Rewards Credit Cards as they’re simply the best in those categories with multiple transfer partners. There are frequently increased sign-up offers on many American Express cards, so if you have been waiting to apply – now is a great time!
