The Chase Sapphire Reserve was launched late summer and has been a hit in the travel and miles/points world… with people under 5/24.. or those that maintain $250k+ USD with Chase, that is.

Even though I don’t like Chase as much as AMEX (not that many transfer partners and also the ridiculous 5/24 rule), I still upgraded my Sapphire Preferred to the Sapphire Reserve… mainly for the free travel credit. I already received $300 USD towards the cost of an airline ticket and paid the $450 USD annual fee. So I’m at -$150 USD right now, however when the new year comes I will have another $300 USD in travel credit.

So while I upgraded my Sapphire Preferred a while ago, one of my friends still hadn’t and he is also way over 5/24 and obviously didn’t get approved for the Sapphire Reserve. Yesterday, I finally talked him into upgrading and we called the Sapphire Preferred phone line and explained what we’d like to do:

Agent: “Are you sure you want to upgrade? You will miss the 100k points…
Friend: “Yes, I’m sure, and I know that
Agent: “But applying for the Sapphire Reserve is really the best way to get it, plus you will get 100k points…
Friend: “I applied but was denied, so I would just like to upgrade
Agent: “Yes, but are you sure you want to upgrade? Maybe I can transfer you to the credit department and they can reconsider your application…
Friend: “I already did that and they weren’t able to do anything…
Agent: “Hmmm.. so are you sure you still want to upgrade?
Friend: F#$K!!! “Yes…..!!!

Oh my… Chase agents are really trying to “sell” the 100k points to everyone.. When I upgraded my card, I was just asked once if I was sure and not multiple times! My friend was at the point where he wanted to inform the Chase agent of the ridiculous 5/24 rule, but ultimately he decided against it since that wouldn’t help anyone.

But fear not, there is hope for 100k… Out and Out reports that it may be possible to get the 100k points even if you already upgraded to the Sapphire Reserve… by downgrading and then applying for the Sapphire Reserve directly when you are under 5/24. He reports he would have to wait 6-7 months until he is under 5/24 and just can’t do that. Hell, I can’t do that either – I get 3-4 new credit cards monthly!

Anyone else had a similar upgrading experience? Seems like Chase is really pushing this new card and wants to give out 100k points… if only they reconsidered their unfriendly 5/24 rule…
