I’m flying to my favourite city in the world on Wednesday to visit a few friends, and I couldn’t be any more excited! I love Mexico City and the Mexican culture in general, so while I probably won’t be exploring much, I will be seeing a ton of friends that I have there.. and that makes me quite happy.
So how am I getting there? Well, for the outbound, I booked Seattle to Mexico City with United in First Class for ~$250, which is great. I mean it isn’t mileage run material, but that’s still a great fare. The First Class fares on the way back were a bit expensive at around ~$450, so I booked a one-way and was hoping for something to open up in terms of either award travel or cheaper flights.
Well, here we are just a few days before I depart and I still have no return. And everything is sold out on the day I need to fly back. I can’t fly a day earlier or a day later because of logistical reasons and therefore I’m “stuck” with one day only. Well, nothing is available in terms of awards and Economy is now pricing at ~$500+. Great.
While I know that something eventually will open up, I did find an alternative route and was wondering what you guys thought (it is a bit mad).
I was thinking of flying Lufthansa First Class from Mexico City to Munich and then fly from Europe back to Seattle either with Austrian Business Class, LOT Business Class, or something else. Anyway, Mexico City to Munich is F8, which means that it is wide open as of now and I doubt that anyone will book that award since it isn’t that popular in First Class… so I could potentially have the entire cabin to myself… but I feel like it would be a waste of miles.
Then I can book any of the Business Class options from Europe back to Seattle. So essentially, I would be in Europe for ~5 hours before heading back to Seattle… it sounds a bit mad, crazy, and really awesome at the same time. I have the miles, so that isn’t a problem… but I can’t help but feel guilty that I would be “wasting” them. I mean, it would kind of be a waste of miles.
On one hand, it would be awesome to fly this route and try out a new Business Class product from Europe.. and it would be cool to have Lufthansa First Class all to myself… But on the other hand, this would be a waste of around 130-160k miles, depending on what airline I book with.
What do you guys think? Book the long (awesome) way or wait for something (normal) to open up. I was thinking I could fly Aeromexico’s B787 from Mexico City to Los Angeles, but then nothing is available from LA to Seattle…
