Lufthansa offers one of my most favourite First Class products in the world (if not the most favourite). I love Lufthansa and continue to be loyal to them – that is because of their top quality, professionalism, and incredible experiences they offer. I’ve flown Lufthansa First Class on every aircraft they operate their First Class on:
- Lufthansa First Class A330 Munich to Dubai
- Lufthansa First Class A340 Munich to Los Angeles
- Lufthansa First Class A380 Frankfurt to San Francisco
- Lufthansa First Class B744 Seattle to Frankfurt
- Lufthansa First Class B748 Chicago to Frankfurt
One interesting (probably-not-happening-anytime-soon) rumour I’ve been hearing is that Lufthansa First Class award space is not as good as it once was… and perhaps that means Lufthansa is moving towards restricting First Class awards to Miles & More members… similar to what SWISS does with their First Class (which I recently booked on their Boeing 777).
I mean, generally that’s somewhat true with many airlines releasing less award seats and they actually want to sell more seats since the price of paid Business Class is much lower than it once was – that’s also because Economy Class tends to be more expensive.
So while I know that there might be less award seats available (I mean Lufthansa already only releases a few seats to partner airlines about two weeks before departure), I don’t think Lufthansa will restrict their First Class to Miles & More members anytime soon.
Why? Because they are really good partners with most Star Alliance airlines and if they started to restrict their First Class (like SWISS), Lufthansa wouldn’t look as appealing anymore to other airlines. Furthermore, the value of some miles would significantly decrease (such as those of Air Canada, Avianca, and United). On the other hand, the value of Miles & More miles would then significantly increase.
I think the effects of Lufthansa restricting First Class awards would actually have a much bigger impact than simply making partner airlines’ miles less valuable – major transferable points would then also significantly decrease in value. The three big ones that I’m talking about are obviously Chase Ultimate Rewards, AMEX Membership Rewards, and Starwood Preferred Guest Starpoints.
The only positive news would be that there presumably would be more award space available to Miles & More members… just like with SWISS First Class.. which is wide open on most routes for Miles & More Senator and HON Circle Members.
To be honest, I really don’t see Lufthansa restricting First Class awards anytime soon.. or for that matter, ever. They really do rely on their partner airlines and therefore they wouldn’t be “playing fair” if they started to restrict awards like SWISS, which is a much smaller airline.
