In a few weeks, American Airlines AAdvantage will be significantly changing their award chart and some awards will go up a lot of miles in price, therefore it is best to book aspirational awards before 22 March 2016. One of the most “hot” awards with AAdvantage right now is the Etihad First Apartment for as little as 40k miles.
You can change the date/time for FREE with AAdvantage and to my understanding, if you “lock in” an award now for the future, you will be able to change it post 22 March for FREE as long as the routing remains the same – so you can change the date/time without having to reprice the award at a higher cost.
A few weeks ago, I shared the best way to Book Etihad First Apartment using AAdvantage Miles.. by calling the Australian AA phone number since they can see Etihad award space easily.
Well, yesterday I was casually browsing the Etihad website for award space between Sydney/Melbourne and Abu Dhabi, and literally nothing was available June – August except one day in July, where I found two seats from Melbourne to Abu Dhabi… so looks like I’m going to Australia!
After finding the award space, I immediately called AAustralia and placed the award on hold and decided to work out the logistics of how I would fly to Australia, etc. The date is actually super convenient for me because I will be in Europe for ~3 months anyway in the summer (in Poland) and therefore it will be super cool to finally fly to Australia.
I also added a Qantas domestic flight in Business Class from Sydney to Melbourne before the Etihad flight, since I will spend most of my time in Australia in Sydney anyway. I paid a total of 60k AAdvantage Miles and ~$90 USD. That’s an incredible award.
The flight is ~14 hours… so that’s clearly the best way to maximise the Etihad First Apartment… whereas a similar flight from Abu Dhabi to New York would cost 90k AA miles (prior to 22 March).
I’m actually planning on incorporating this trip with a trip to Asia and the Middle East (more on this later) and hope to fly First on Cathay and Qatar.
Hopefully everyone is having an awesome weekend… I am!
