Note: these benefits are current at the time of writing, I take no responsibility for changes made to the product in the future.
This year, Barclaycard in the United States, has been upgrading and significantly changing some of their key credit cards. The main upgrades include Chip integration and change of benefits across several cards.
The most used card for me is currently the Miles & More® Premier World MasterCard®, for a number of reasons:
- Miles & More is my primary frequent flyer programme
- Redeeming miles for Lufthansa First Class anytime before departure
- 2 miles per $1 USD spent with Miles & More integrated partners
- NO Foreign Transaction Fees
- NO Annual Fee for Miles & More Senator and HON Circle Members
I’ve had the card for a few years and I use it all the time, I just love Lufthansa Miles & More miles and Lufthansa in general, so the Miles & More MasterCard is probably my most used card, and it happens to be one of the first three cards I got when I turned 18.. so it basically has a special place in my
Well, it looks like Barclaycard has finally upgraded the Miles & More MasterCard as of recently and added a whole new array of benefits to the card, along with a new look.
The card also has a new name: Miles & More World Elite MasterCard
The card is now a World Elite MasterCard instead of just a World MasterCard. There is also just one version of the card now, previously there were two – the Premier World MasterCard version (Silver) and the Regular MasterCard (Blue).
The new benefits for the Miles & More World Elite MasterCard are as follows:
- 35.000 bonus Miles & More award miles after spending $1k USD in the first 90 days
- Two complimentary Lufthansa Business Lounge vouchers, annually
- Achieve Miles & More Status Faster (convert award miles to status miles)
- Annual Companion Ticket
- 15% off Miles & More Hotel and Car Awards
- 2 miles per $1 USD spent with Miles & More integrated airlines
- 1 mile per $1 USD spent everywhere else
- Chip Technology
- No Foreign Transaction Fees
- Low Intro APR on Balance Transfers
- $89 USD Annual Fee, waived for Senator and HON Circle Members
Obviously for a $10 USD increase in the annual fee, the benefits are well worth it. I will continue to receive an annual fee waiver because of my Miles & More Senator Status. The sign-up bonus is now comparable to other airline credit cards and is also quite generous, given that Miles & More miles are hard to acquire (the only valuable transfer partner is Starwood Preferred Guest).
I like how cardmembers will receive two vouchers each year to access the Lufthansa Business Lounges, this also strengthens the value of the card in general. I will most likely give away my vouchers since I have access to the Senator Lounges.
Achieve Miles & More Status Faster: this is an interesting feature since Miles & More offers select members the ability to do this (usually if they think the member won’t qualify for status for the following year). You can basically convert award miles into status miles at a ratio of 5:1, minimum of 5k and maximum of 25k Award Miles can be converted into status miles. I personally wouldn’t do this since I value my miles way over this conversion rate.
In terms of the card functionality, a chip. FINALLY! Oh thank you Barclaycard! Seriously, I use this card all of the time in Europe and there are always issues swiping it… so FINALLY a CHIP! The card continues to receive no Foreign Transaction Fees.
All in all, for a $10 USD increase in the annual fee, the changes are amazing. The card is definitely an upgrade over the old version of the card and I’m sure more people will now sign-up for it and use it on a daily basis. The only thing I don’t like is the design.. perhaps it will grow on me, but I really liked the airplane design the previous version of the card had:
But obviously benefits and functionality over look, so I will live. It has been a great day in terms of credit cards and for existing cardmembers, you can call and request a new design with a chip. Time to book Lufthansa First Class!
