I’m having a bit of trouble deciding if I should fly Lufthansa First Class on the Airbus A380 or the Boeing 747-8i in about two or so weeks. I have to get back to America for the start of uni in a few weeks and I have several options as far as routes go about which aircraft to fly. I will be flying to Seattle from Poland with a connection in Frankfurt and then another U.S. city (since there is no First Class to Seattle). On the outbound I flew the Boeing 747-400, which had a separate seat and bed, though unfortunately First Class on the B747-400 has been discontinued (which is a shame, since I think it was the best configuration).

Here are the routes currently flown to the United States by Lufthansa on the two aircraft:

Airbus A380

  • IAH
  • LAX
  • SFO
  • MIA
  • JFK

Boeing 747-8i

  • BOS
  • LAX
  • IAD
  • JFK
  • ORD

The issue is here: Lufthansa Miles & More only allows two connections (three flights) on a one-way itinerary from Europe to the U.S. and therefore I have to select the destinations where United can fly directly from Seattle to where I would be landing from my Lufthansa First Class flight. So my options remain to fly from Frankfurt to:

Houston (A380), Los Angeles (A380 and B747-8i), San Francisco (A380), Washington (B747-8i), Chicago (B747-8i).

So that means if I want to fly the A380 I would have to fly from Frankfurt to either Houston, San Francisco, or Los Angeles. If I want to fly the B747-8i, I would need to fly either to Los Angeles, Washington, or Chicago.

Here is the #FirstWorldProblem: All of the A380 flights to the three cities I can fly to leave at around 10:00 and I would be getting to Frankfurt around 08:30 which wouldn’t leave much time to spend in the First Class Terminal. If I fly the B747-8i, I can spend more time in the First Class Terminal since the flights to Los Angeles, Washington, and Chicago leave later in the afternoon (around 13:00 and some even later).

So I am stuck here in a bit of a situation… I really want to fly First Class on the A380, but that would mean a really short connection in Frankfurt.. which means no bath or rubber duck! If I fly the B747-8i, I can spend ~5 hours in the First Class Terminal AND still fly an awesome plane that I haven’t…

I realise this is a #FirstWorldProblem, but I am having trouble deciding. I can see award space on all of the flights I’ve mentioned above in First Class and therefore that isn’t an issue, plus as a Miles & More Senator they are sometimes able to clear the First Class waitlist for me.

I’m looking for advice as to which aircraft to book… do I fly the A380 and spend little time at the First Class Terminal… or do I fly the 747-8i and spend more time at the FCT? Please help in deciding!

After all… these are waiting! 🙂
